A story of passion

At the root of this story is passion; a family’s passion for China and all the riches that the country entails. In the 1930s, Jacques Dautresme, tireless captain of overseas courier crossings was fascinated by the forgotten treasures of the Middle Kingdom. His nephew, Francis, a talented photographer, renowned aesthete and precursor, was equally inspired by the country and in 1965, decided to revive the millennia-long Asian savoir-faire by opening a concept store in Paris dedicated to the poetry of daily life.

In 2011 the Compagnie Française de l’Orient et de la Chine took a new turn on its journey, thanks to the arrival of Laurent Dumas; businessman, passionate collector of art, and president of Emerige; breathing new life into the brand with a contemporary lifestyle feel. "Whilst there isn’t a direct link between the CFOC and my main activities, my passion for art means that I very much appreciate the artisanal craftsmanship that is the cornerstone of the brand. Taking on the task to awaken this sleeping beauty suddenly became a very tempting challenge”. Laurent Dumas

Having been seduced by the magic and legendary story of the company, Laurent Dumas decided to revive the brand along with Sarah Lavoine and Francis Schmidt, two architects and interior designers sharing the same vision. Together they have renewed the flagship store on Boulevard Haussmann, transforming it into an elegant showcase with a refined and resolutely contemporary atmosphere. Meanwhile maintaining its Asian heritage, the Compagnie Française de l’Orient et de la Chine remains the address of choice for lovers of travel, arts and artisanal crafts.

At the end of 2014 Laurent Dumas appointed a new management team, who, together with the artistic director, Valerie le Héno, introduced a fresh approach: a "fusion" between French-Parisian lifestyle chic and meticulous Asian expertise. A casual, understated luxury-look that mixes influences, techniques and colours.

With a French perspective on interior design paired with traditional artisanal techniques that have almost completely disappeared in Europe; small-scale, hand-craft workshops with which the company has been working with for over 50 years; rich, sensual, quality materials; unique creations that cannot be found anywhere else; distinctive shapes and effects; altogether offering a daring approach to creating one’s own unique style.

It is this signature deco-fusion by the Compagnie Française de l’Orient et de la Chine that takes us on the road to Marvels...
